- each month, the eg3.com editorial staff
surveys thousands of web sites to identify the 'best' or
'most interesting' news, white papers, demo's, and other
electronic design sites - focused specifically on
designers of electronic products. here are our
highlights and top choices from the last thirty days.

In an effort to organize the 'alphabet soup' of
wireless standards, the IEEE
has just published a reference guide to the 802.x standards.
"Wireless Communication Standards: A Study of IEEE 802.11,
802.15 and 802.16" provides a comprehensive overview of the
IEEE WLAN, WPAN and WMAN standards, while discussing
deployment of WLAN networks. It further addresses current
business trends and provides insight into future wireless
communication standards development. Release here
, and it can be purchased here
.
Beyond the 802.x standards, don't forget Bluetooth , which
had a great December. The Bluetooth SIG announced the adoption
of Bluetooth Core Specification Version 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced
Data Rate), which increased data rates by 3x. Release here
. The SIG also announced a '
roadmap ' of future Bluetooth developments, and
successfully participated in a transition of the former
Bluetooth conference into Wireless
Connectivity America , just held in Santa Clara, CA.
On the analysis side, December saw a flurry of fresh
research into the emerging wireless future -
eg3.com now has complete keyword coverage of all the
major standards - point your browser to http://www.eg3.com/mobile
and click on a standard (802.11, Zigbee, Bluetooth, etc.), to
drill down for more details.

microsoft vs. google : new search technologies

Microsoft
may have sent shudders through the nouveau-riche
of competitor Google
with its stealth announcement of a new, improved 'beta
search.' Try out the new 'Microsoft Beta Search' at http://beta.search.msn.com/
. During the lulls of December, you can also take some time to
educate yourself to become a better Web searcher. For example,
don't miss the Google
Guide , a tutorial on how better to use Google. A complete
eg3.com section on better searching is here .
On the search front, the various 'newsgroups' often offer
that special answer to that specific design question. There a
few meritorious search engines just for news - try Google
groups , or search Yahoo
groups for specific embedded groups. On the news front
(i.e., reported news), you can also use Google's
news page or even Rocketnews.com
, a competitor. Suppose you are investigating Green
Hills Software products, for example - check the Google
news search for recent company updates including non-Green
Hills articles. Check it out, here
. For specific electronic articles, try the advanced search at
EE Times , here
. Happy searching!

Among interesting sites new to eg3.com this month,
we identified a new 'learning site,' Demo's
on Demand . This site offers an assortment of tutorials
and vendor demo's, primarily in the EDA and SOC areas. For
those of you searching for new employment, EE
Times launched a new employment micro-site, EE
Times Career Center . It may or may not prove more
efficient than Monster.com
or other more general employment sites.
PICMG
published its AdvancedTCA
tutorials, here
. And Interphase
published its own paper, The
ABCs of ATCA . For those into 'Open Source' or 'GNU,'
don't miss the very interesting Codesourcery
site which currently specializes in ARM tools.
